How to use AI to split an image by color into Photoshop layers
Generate AI-assisted Masking with LayerUnfold, reselect the artwork, and run the local CPU-based Split Layer by Color action. Each visible Masking color becomes a transparent pixel layer in the same Photoshop document.
Color separation workflow
- Select the flat artwork layer
- Generate Masking and adjust its regions
- Reselect the artwork and run Split Layer by Color
- Review and edit each output group
CPU color splitting and ticket cost
Split Layer by Color processes Masking regions and source alpha on the local CPU and costs 1 ticket. The separate Masking action sends the exported document image to OpenAI and costs 5 tickets. Color splitting cuts source pixels into regions; it does not redraw the artwork.
Limits
The result follows the Masking colors and does not recover the historical layers of the original PSD. Keep the source artwork and review gradients, transparency, and boundaries before editing.
Frequently asked questions
Does every color split call generative AI?
No. Color splitting is local CPU processing; Masking generation is a separate OpenAI action.
Can it restore the original PSD layers?
No. It creates new editable layers from the current pixels of the finished image.
